About the song: "Yesterdays"
A mid-aged couple relaxes in a well appointed living room, just settling in to do some reading or watching TV at the end of a day.
Some soft music plays from a speaker in the corner, while the house cat strolls in from somewhere and stretches himself out on the couch and waits patiently for some attention.
After a short while of silence, the guy -- we'll call him J -- looks up from his paper and notices that his wife, K, is looking at him. She looks good, still wearing the black dress she wore to work that day. Her hair still done up perfectly, like her busy day never even happened.
"What's up? Your wine need a refill?", he says to her coyly while turning the page.
She proceeds to put the glass onto the table and looks at him, perched seriously on the edge of the chair. "We need to talk."
J looks up from the paper, wilting quickly in his hands. "About...?"
K folds her hands on her lap, looks down and takes a breath. "I think we...I... need to take some time".
There is no pain in her voice, no sadness -- it's like she's answering a trivia question; simply a matter-of-fact.
The room suddenly seems smaller, quieter. The cat leaves J's side in a rush and the paper gets slowly folded onto the table.
"Where's this coming from? You're not happy?" J asks bewildered.
"J, these last years you've been everything I imagined. You work hard each day for us, you make sure the bills are paid, you make me laugh..." She shifts her position closer to him and takes his hand in her own.
"I love you J...really."
"But..."
"But, for me, it's changed from the love of a lover to...more of a love I would have for a brother. You know -- it's hard to explain, but it's different".
"I'm sure that happens in every relationship" replies J, now slightly less concerned.
"I know", K sighs, "I guess most people just ignore the change. But I can't".
K gets up, gives J a gentle kiss on the forehead and states simply "I'm going to my mothers for a while...". She grabs her coat and walks to the door. Before turning the knob, she looks back towards the couch and her bewildered husband. She says softly, "I still love you, J".
Before he knows it, the doors is closed and she's gone.
On the kitchen table he finds a note that she's written earlier in the evening. In her typically flawless script is says simply:
Darling, don't you cry tonight,
I still love you
Try to hold your head up high,
Think of sunny afternoons!
Darling, don't you cry tonight
You know that I meant it, I loved you...yesterday.
The song is J's view of this crazy evening and of K's complete lack of emotion in thrusting him into this unseen situation.
In a way, I bet we all some type of "yesterday" like this -- something comes out of nowhere and blindsides you, leaving you whirling in the aftermath to wonder what? why? how?...
That's also why the song's title is plural... we likely all have way more than one. In a way, they help make us who we are. They are our own "yesterdays".
